Course Withdrawal

There are three periods when a student can withdraw from a course: during the drop period, mid-session and late session. Academic Connections (housed under the Office of Undergraduate Studies) reviews late course withdrawals, petitions submitted after the 12th week (or 80% point) in the semester/session. To review the type of withdrawals and points of contacts for the mid-session withdrawals, please visit the Office of the Registrar's website: Course Withdrawal and Petition Instructions

Withdrawal Periods

Drop (through the day of Census) No reason or approval is required
Mid-Session Withdrawal (Census day to the end of the 12th week of the semester) Approval from Dean or Dean's designee of the College of the student's major (or Dean of Graduate Studies for Graduate students) is required.
Late Withdrawal (after the 12th week in the semester) Approval from Dean of Undergraduate Studies (Dean of Graduate Studies for Graduate students) is required.

Late Course Withdrawal Petition Checklist

  • 1. Access the Withdrawal Petition

The Withdrawal Petition Form is available through My爆料社区 located in your Student Center. Please make sure that you submit a complete withdrawal for approval. For steps on how to access the form, please visit the Office of the Registrar's website: Course Withdrawal Petition Form

  • 2. Write your Statement of Withdrawal

The form requires you to write a Statement of Withdrawal, a written, paragraph-form explanation describing your serious and compelling reason for withdrawing, including a timeline of relevant events. (when the issue occurred, how it affected your ability to complete the course). Serious and Compelling reasons include:

    • An extended absence due to a verifiable accident, illness, or personal problem serious enough to cause withdrawal from the university.
    • An extended absence due to a death in the immediate family. This applies to absences exceeding a week due to family affairs that must be attended to by the student.
    • A necessary change in employment status which interferes with the student's ability to attend class. The student's employer must verify this change in employment status in writing for the term in which the withdrawal is being requested.
    • Other unusual or very special cases, considered on their own merit.
  • 3. Gather Supporting Documentation

If you are missing the appropriate documentation, you will receive a request to upload additional submission for a complete withdrawal, which may include:

    • Doctor's notes or verification of illness (e.g., medical documentation, virtual appointment screenshots) for medical reasons
    • Attached orders required for active militay duty
    • Other documentation relevant to personal or family emergencies (e.g., death or accident)
  • 4. Submit your petition

Submit the completed petition form, written statement, and supporting documentation to the Office of the Registrar. Keep a copy of everything for your records.

  • 5. Decision Period
Once your late withdrawal petition has been reviewed, you will receive a notice with a decision on whether it has been approved or denied. If your petition is approved, your letter grade for the course(s) will be updated to a "W" which will not have an effect on the student's GPA.

Withdrawal Impacts

  • Fees: Fee refunds will occur automatically when eligible. There are no refunds after 60% of the term. Visit the Student Fees Policy site more information on fee differences withdrawal refund schedule: Student Financial Services.
  • Financial Aid: Withdrawing from courses can impact future eligibility for student aid including having to repay financial aid for not completing. You should contact the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships to discuss implications of course withdrawals. For more information, read: Financial Aid Impacts from Dropping or Withdrawing
  • Approved Withdrawal Grade: A grade of "W" will appear on the student's record when an approved withdrawal has been authorized and will not have an effect on the student's GPA.
  • Withdrawal Unauthorized Grade: The grade of "WU" will appear on a student's record when the student stopped attending a course they enrolled in without withdrawing officially. A "WU" grade is equivalent to an "F" for GPA purposes.
