Early Academic Intervention is a partnership between the Dean of Students Office, the  Office of Success Coaching, and the Office of Undergraduate Studies.
  • Why am I in an EAI course?
EAI primarily supports high enrollment first year courses. We are working with faculty instructors for the following courses: GEO 102; GEW 100, 101A, and 101B; MATH 101, Math 5/105; Math115; PHIL 110; and all UNIV courses. That means, every student taking these classes is supported by EAI. In total, this serves 70 instructors, 180 course sections, and over 2400 students.
  • What does it mean if I am referred?
An EAI referral means your instructor wants to make sure you succeed in their class. This is not a negative reflection on you and does not impact your student standing, it doesn’t mean you’re failing your class either. On the contrary, an EAI referral gives you an opportunity to speak with a member of the EAI Team about your unique student situation and determine the best pathway to academic achievement before final grades are assigned.   EAI referrals are not recorded anywhere and do not show up on your permanent record.
  • What does my instructor hear about my referral?
If your instructor has referred you, they are interested in helping you and will want to hear about how you are navigating any academic challenges. The EAI Team will contact your instructor after meeting with you, so your instructor is aware of the resources provided, but no details of this meeting will be shared. Your instructor will also be notified if you do not respond to EAI outreach, but this will have no effect on your course grades.
  • Will my parents be notified if I am referred?
No. A referral to EAI does not have any impact on your student standing or grades. The referral is to offer you assistance in getting the resources you need to succeed in your classes.
  • What if I’m concerned about another student in my class?
If you know that one of your classmates is looking for academic support and resources, you can refer them to EAI too. If they’re having trouble submitting homework, getting to class, or anything course related, EAI can help! Please ask your classmate if they are okay being referred before filling out the CCN Referral Form on this page: How To Make A Referral | Cougar Care Network | ±¬ÁÏÉçÇø You can alternatively email your concerns to Katrina Hale, at khale@csusm.edu

Early Academic Intervention (EAI)

  • Who is involved with Early Academic Intervention?
Early Academic Intervention is a partnership between the Dean of Students Office, Office of Success Coaching, and the Office of Undergraduate Studies. In Fall 2025, we are working with faculty instructors for the following courses: GEO 102; GEW 100, 101A, and 101B; MATH 1, 101, 5, 115, and 105; PHIL 110; and UNIV 100A, 200A, 280-7, 300B, and 300C. In total, this serves 70 instructors, 180 course sections, and over 2466 students.
  • What is the process for referral?
Regardless of the EAI supported course you are teaching; all you need to do is visit the to submit a student referral. Make sure to click the box that says "This is for an EAI course." We will take care of routing your referral to the right support resource and we will contact the student. We will do our best to let you know how the student will be supported.
  • How is this different from a normal CCN referral?

From the faculty perspective, all that is different is the one drop-down menu that asks you to clarify that you are teaching an EAI course. The process may seem similar to the CCN referral you're used to, but we want you to refer any student presenting academic challenge, not just students dealing with significant challenges. On our side, we have made some structural changes but the process for faculty referral is the same. We are looking to identify any struggling students and connect them to support before their challenges become insurmountable.

There is no need to submit both a CCN referral AND an EAI referral. Unless there is an immediate need for emergency intervention that would not be appropriate for the EAI team to handle, EAI faculty can submit just the one EAI form and it will get routed to the correct place.

  • Can I refer more than one student at a time?
Yes! Attach the Bulk Submission Template to a single EAI form to refer multiple students at once.
  • Does it actually help to submit these?
Students referred through EAI are ______% more likely to pass the course, and _____% more likely to re-enroll in the following semester! Even the students that don't respond to our outreach have the sense that ±¬ÁÏÉçÇø cares about their well-being and they have a point person to reach out to when/if they are ready to receive the support. We get students responding to us months later all the time!
