Beware Phishing
We have recently observed a significant increase in phishing attempts targeting students,
particularly scams related to fake internship opportunities. These fraudulent emails often appear to come from legitimate companies, professors,
or career services, but they are designed to steal your personal information, login
credentials, or financial details.
How to Spot a Phishing Email:
- Too Good to Be True – If an internship offer seems unusually high-paying or easy to get, be cautious.
- Urgency & Pressure – Scammers often create a sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly.
- Suspicious Links & Attachments – Hover over links before clicking. If the URL looks strange, don’t open it.
- Unusual Sender Email – Verify the sender's email address. If it’s from a free email service (e.g., Gmail,
Yahoo) instead of a company domain, it’s likely a scam.
- Requests for Personal Information – Legitimate employers won’t ask for your passwords, Social Security Number, or banking
details via email.
What to Do if You Receive a Suspicious Email:
- Do Not Click on Any Links or Open Any Attachments
- Do Not Respond – Even replying can confirm your email is active to scammers, meaning they will send
more in the future.
- Report It Immediately – Report suspicious emails by forwarding them to Helpdesk@csusm.edu.
