HOPE & Wellness Peer Education Program

Peer Education Programs

The HOPE & Wellness Center supports the mission of the Student Health and Counseling Services and Cal State San Marcos by educating and empowering students to make healthy lifestyle choices. The HOPE & Wellness Center offers students opportunities to have hands on experience in advocating and educating students as peer educators in various roles.  Students selected for the program will work with the health education and advocacy team in one or more of the following areas: 

  • Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
  • Sexual Health 
  • Nutrition & Physical Health
  • Mental Health 
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Sexual Violence 

Peer Educator Programs Available

Volunteer/Non Paid Positions

HOPE Interns (6-8 hours per week)

Interns educate and empower students to make healthy lifestyle choices. Students selected for the program will work with the health promotion staff and HOPE Peer Health Educators in developing programs, events, workshops for the campus community in one or more of the following areas: Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, Sexual Health, Nutrition & Physical Health, Mental Health, Healthy Relationships or any other health topic. This to fulfill student's 90 hrs of internship for a class requirement. 

Healthy Cougars Peer Educators (4-6 hours per month)

This is a group of volunteer certified peer educators who are trained and committed to promoting awareness and advocating health and wellness related issues to the Cal State San Marcos community. They are trained to help encourage and educate their peers to make healthy lifestyle choices through outreach, workshops, group discussions and campus awareness events. Healthy Cougars Peer Educators (HCPE) help staff the HOPE & Wellness Center programs throughout the year.


Peer Educator Positions (Paid)

HOPE Peer Health Educators (8 hours per week)

HOPE Peer Health Educators (HPHE) play a pivotal leadership role in empowering students to make informed and healthy lifestyle choices. As campus leaders, HPHEs collaborate closely with the health promotion staff to design, facilitate, and lead workshops, events, and programs that engage the campus community in meaningful discussions and activities. Areas of focus include Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, Sexual Health, Nutrition & Physical Health, Mental Health, Healthy Relationships, or other pressing health topics. Through their leadership, HPHEs inspire positive change and cultivate an environment of health and wellness across campus. Students must be a second year or sophomore and above standing when applying. 

Sexual Violence Peer Educators (8 hours per week)

This is a group of students who are trained to provide education to the 爆料社区 community related to healthy relationships, sexual assault, relationship violence, healthy masculinity, bystander intervention, stalking, and resources. SVPE's will work closely with the Sexual Violence Advocacy & Education staff and co-facilitate presentations to various communities on campus (fraternities, sororities, classrooms, etc.). Students must be a second year or sophomore and above standing when applying. 

Interested students may. Applications are OPEN for FALL 2025 and DUE by MAY 9, 2025.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 Responsibilities and Activities may include:

  • Build leadership and communication skills
  • Receive training in a variety of health and wellness topics
  • Co-facilitating trainings with the Education & Advocacy Team
  • Coordinating Peer Education meetings
  • Supervising Healthy Cougars members in absence of the HOPE staff members
  • Facilitating classroom presentations as needed
  • Collects demographic information and evaluation forms from all training and program participants and compiles these statistics appropriately, adjusting presentations based upon participant feedback.
  • Assist with marketing and promoting health-related programs and SHCS services
  • Assist with planning and implementing various health program events and health activities.
  • Research for grant/funding opportunities
  • Develop and facilitate one health workshop on campus
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the Healthy Cougars (PAWS) program and SHCS Staff
  • Continually update personal health knowledge
  • Other responsibilities/duties as assigned

STUDENT QUALIFICATIONS

  • Public Speaking ability and non-verbal communication skills
  • Open-mindedness
  • Relevant experience related to health
  • Reliability, responsibility and commitment
  • Open to All Majors
  • Must be a sophomore or second year standing and above to apply for PAID positions
