Media Relations

Cal State San Marcos鈥 University Communications office works with the media daily. Our team issues media releases, assists with media events and handles the university鈥檚 strategic communications. We also help in publicizing news that has a university connection. 

Stay Connected

Our  website, social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and X/Twitter), press releases and other marketing materials all shine a light on stories about our campus community.  

Sharing Information

We encourage you to share information so we can determine newsworthiness and the proper platform for potential use. Note that we can鈥檛 guarantee that all submissions will be used. 

To submit items for consideration, email publicity@csusm.eduand include a clear subject line along with clear and concise information about your event or story suggestion. Be sure to include the 鈥渨ho, what, when, where and why.鈥 Requests should be submitted at least three weeks in advance.  

What We Do

Our goal is to facilitate coverage by print or digital news agencies, online outlets, and radio or television stations. Not all stories will garner media interest, but some can be featured on NewsCenter or 爆料社区 social media platforms.  

Our office is continually building relationships with local, state and national media in addition to responding to media inquiries from reporters seeking information and university experts. If you are contacted by a reporter, refer them to University Communications. We will serve as your liaison and work with the reporter to facilitate any interviews.  

We also work to pitch stories to the media about any grants, awards, etc.  

Consider the following before submitting a story idea:  

  • Is there a contact person who can speak about the subject?
  • Will that person be easily reachable and willing to speak?
  • Is there a compelling person at the center of the story?
  • For broadcast and social media: Is there something visual that can be shown?
  • Will the story appeal to a broad audience?

  • Our image and video library provides a variety of photos to choose from. Additional pictures of campus, students and activities are available upon request.
  • Social Channels Follow our social media accounts to stay up-to-date on campus news.
  • Access to Campus Media personnel are free to enter the campus, but our media relations team should be notified ahead of time. See campus map and directions for parking. Entry in to classes or workspace must be cleared with the Office of Communications in advance.
  • The Office of Communications should be contacted by media personnel prior to attending an event as part of their news coverage. This will enable us to provide additional background information and make arrangements for parking and potential interviews.

All commercial filming and external photo shoot requests are managed by our Events and Conference Services team. Submit your external client request at least 8 weeks in advance to be considered.
