Through these features, students can learn more about faculty members鈥 research interests, leadership in their fields, and the diverse career pathways they support. The spotlight helps graduate students connect with faculty, discover opportunities for collaboration, and better understand how mentorship and research experiences can contribute to their academic, professional, and personal growth.

This platform is dedicated to highlighting a variety of projects, research and creative endeavors, fieldwork, internships, study abroad experiences, community service and volunteering, awards, and enriching co-curricular activities. Selected students/alumni will be featured in our newsletters, OGSR鈥檚 website and social media, and more!

  • Shanelle Watkins - Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership

    Shanelle

    Dr. Shanelle Watkins is a speaker, mentor, and educator who helps students navigate college, graduate school, and beyond with confidence and clarity. She currently serves as Assistant Director of the Black Resource Center at UC San Diego, where she supports students in their academic and personal development. As a proud 爆料社区 alumna, Dr. Watkins understands the importance of building connections, finding support, and trusting the process while pursuing an advanced degree. Through her work and her platform, Leading While Becoming, she continues to guide and empower students, sharing lessons learned and strategies for success at every stage of their academic and professional journey.

  • Kate Carlson - Master of Science in Kinesiology

    Kate Carlson

    Kate Carlson鈥檚 outstanding academic record, and her exceptional thesis鈥鈥淓ffects of Solar Radiation on Fluid Loss in Aerobic Exercise鈥鈥攅xemplify the highest standards of graduate scholarship. Her year-long, large-scale study, conducted in collaboration with a global leader in the sports apparel industry, has produced the most comprehensive real-world dataset to date on this topic and is already influencing safety and performance research in athletics and labor settings.

    In addition to her academic and research excellence, Kate has demonstrated unwavering leadership, professionalism, and service to both the university and the broader community. A first-generation college student and former student-athlete, she continues to inspire others through her resilience, dedication, and commitment to impactful scientific inquiry.

    Kate will head up to Oregon as she has accepted a research scientist position at the prestigious Nike Sport Research Lab housed in the Le Bron James' Innovation Center at Nike's Headquarters.

  • Mayela Caro - Master of Arts in History

    Mayela Caro

    Mayela Caro is an Assistant Professor of History at San Diego Miramar College. Before beginning her faculty role, she served as a Curatorial Assistant at the Smithsonian鈥檚 National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. She is currently completing her doctorate in history and public history at the University of California, Riverside, with an expected graduation in 2025.

  • Jocelyne Dates - Master of Science in Biological Sciences

    Jocelyne Dates

    Jocelyne Dates was named the awardee of the 2023-2024 Graduate Dean's Award.

    As the winner of this award, Jocelyne was invited to President's Outstanding Graduate Award Dinner & Ceremony that was held on May 1, 2024. She was joined by the awardees of the five other Dean's Award Recipients from the College of Education, Health & Human Services; College of Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences; College of Business Administration; College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics; and the Student Leadership Award selected by the Dean of Students.

    That evening, President Neufeldt announced Jocelyne as this year's President's Outstanding Graduate. The President鈥檚 Outstanding Graduate Award recognizes one graduating student each year who demonstrates exemplary contributions to their field and to the university. This distinction is considered to be the highest honor a graduating student can receive.

    Jocelyne, who will be attending a PhD program at Vanderbilt University this Fall, was also highlighted in an extensive article from 爆料社区's .

  • Kanav Aggarwal - Master of Biotechnology

    Kanav Aggarwal

    Kanav Aggarwal, led a 3-person team who won 2nd Place and Most Innovative Solution at pitch competition! The event is based on identifying a significant problem related to the impact of water on the region.

    Mr. Aggarwal is the inventor of ChloroBoost whose primary emphasis lies in water conservation within agriculture, recognizing that 40% of water usage occurs in this sector. The initiative centers on enhancing soil water retention. Farmers apply biofertilizer to their fields, allowing it to dry before proceeding with conventional crop cultivation practices. This approach could halve wastewater output, consequently enhancing soil quality.

    Through their two awards, the team took home $9500 in cash prizes.

  • Zane Cooper - Master of Arts in History

    Zane Cooper

    Zane Cooper graduated from the Master of Arts in History program at 爆料社区 in Spring 2016. His thesis was on "Raw Data: A Geopolitical History of Hard Drive Technology, 1978-2016"

    After finishing his degree at 爆料社区, Zane enrolled into the Ph.D. program at the at the University of Pennsylvania and will be finishing his dissertation "BIT/COIN/RARE/EARTH: Data, Energy, and Extraction Across the Arctic" and graduating this Spring.

    We are thrilled to share that Zane has been offered and accepted a tenure track position at . He will be starting this Fall 2024 as an Assistant Professor of Digital Media and Film.

  • Poorvi Datta - Master of Science in Biological Sciences

    Poorvi Datta

    CONGRATULATIONS to Poorvi Datta on their win of the Crellin Pauling Student Teaching Award this January 2024!

    The award acknowledges outstanding student teaching achievement by a California State University (CSU) student in biotechnology-related settings, courses and programs. The Pauling Awards are designed to recognize and promote effective teaching practices, to celebrate the work of outstanding teaching assistants, and to inspire future science and engineering educators.

    Poorvi is expected to earn their Master of Science in Biological Science in Spring 2024 and will move on to continue their Ph.D. studies in the Fall.
