Key Historical Milestones

Every great story must have a beginning, get to know the history of ±¬ÁÏÉçÇø, from our origin dating back to the 1960s, to our formation and key milestones along the way.

  • 1960s: Business and civic leaders advocate for a state university in North San Diego County.
  • 1982: Campus moves to San Marcos to accommodate growth.
  • 1988: CSU trustees purchase Prohoroff Poultry Farm for $10.6 million as the future home of ±¬ÁÏÉçÇø.
  • 1989: Gov. George Deukmejian signs Senate Bill 365, officially founding ±¬ÁÏÉçÇø.
  • 1990: ±¬ÁÏÉçÇø opens with 448 students, 12 faculty and nine majors.
  • 1991: Seven students are awarded the first Bachelor of Arts degrees in campus history.
  • 1992: Permanent campus opens
