The State University Grant (SUG) offers need-based tuition assistance to eligible California State University (CSU) students, helping make higher education more affordable. To qualify, students must be California residents or meet AB 540 exemption criteria, be enrolled at least half-time in a state-supported program, and be pursuing their first bachelor鈥檚, master鈥檚, or credential. They must also demonstrate financial need, maintain satisfactory academic progress, and have a Student Aid Index (SAI) below 50% of the university鈥檚 off-campus cost of attendance. Students who receive other tuition-specific aid, such as a Cal Grant Fee award, are not eligible for SUG. Priority is given to students with the greatest financial need, including those with a low SAI, Cal Grant B recipients without a Cal Grant Fee award, and those who meet the March 2 financial aid application deadline.
SUG award amounts vary based on financial need and enrollment status. The maximum award cannot exceed the student鈥檚 financial need or the tuition charged for the term. Undergraduate students may also qualify for up to $5,000 in Cost of Attendance (COA) awards.
For summer sessions, SUG is available for state-supported courses, with priority given to half-time students. Unit limits apply: undergraduates are limited to 150 semester units (or 225 quarter units), with exceptions for longer programs or approved one-term appeals. Credential students are limited to 30 units, and graduate students to 125% of their program鈥檚 required units.
