Fire Procedures

Building Fires

爆料社区 building occupants are required to evacuate a building when the fire alarm sounds, an emergency notification is received, and when ordered to by a first responder, buiding marshal, or campus official.

Building Fire Response - RACE

Rescue

Rescue anyone (including yourself) who is in immediate danger from the fire.  

Alarm

Sound the fire alarm by pulling the nearest fire alarm pull station and dialing 9-1-1.

Contain

Contain the fire by closing all doors and windows in and around the fire area.  

Evacuate

Evacuate the building using Evacuation procedures.

Before opening a door, place the back of your hand on the door to check for heat:  

  • Cool door: slowly check the door handle for heat and proceed to exit.
  • Hot door:
    • Find or create an alternative exit (windows).
    • NO other exit is available:
      • Smoke only - open the door slowly, move to a crawling position, staying low, and quickly crawl to an exit.
      • Fire observed - keep the door shut. Place any cloth-type material at the base of the door to keep smoke from entering the room.
    • Fire Extinguishers
      • No one is obligated to use a fire extinguisher.
      • Trained employees may choose to use an extinguisher on a small single-fuel fire in a location with a safe exit behind them.
      • Fire extinguishers can be carried during evacuation to support safe egress.
      • Fire Extinguisher Instructions:
        • Pull the pin
        • Aim the nozzle
        • Squeeze the trigger in bursts
        • Sweep from side to side 

Wildland Fire

In the event of a wildland fire, campus will monitor air quality and modify outdoor duties and activities as appropriate.  

If the utility company activates a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) that affects campus, operations may be modified or restricted. Follow all instructions from University Communications and the emergency notification system.

County emergency responders may advise the campus to shelter in place or evacuate. The campus notification system will provide instructions for the campus community. Please follow the Shelter in Place and Campus Evacuation instructions. 

Wildland Fire Incident Information

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) maintains a log of all current and recent wild land fire incidents statewide. Major fires will usually have an incident-specific page created and linked to from this page.

 Wildfire Smoke Information

Specific smoke advisories during wildfires are issued by the San Diego Air Pollution Control District and can be found on the page if available.
