CHABSS All College Meeting

Faculty and staff in audience

Faculty and staff of the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences (CHABSS) met yesterday to kick off the 2018 academic year with its All-College Meeting, also known as convocation. The meeting was designed to reunite the faculty and staff after the summer break and discuss the way ahead for CHABSS in the new academic year and beyond.

After one year of being Dean of the university鈥檚 largest college, Dr. Julia Johnson is undertaking the creation of CHABSS鈥 new strategic plan, which will provide the framework for the college鈥檚 priorities in shaping the education of its students. 鈥淚n my role as Dean, there are a lot of wonkish tasks that I have to do, that I鈥檓 mandated to do. However, in terms of our identity, in terms of our direction and vision, I鈥檓 seeking the experience and input from our diverse faculty and staff to help me build CHABSS鈥 strategic plan to advance student success.鈥

Brenda Allen

The meeting鈥檚 guest speaker was Dr. Brenda Allen, Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Colorado, Denver. Her address was titled Cultivating Justice Through Planning, and it underscored the critical importance of obtaining input and feedback from the people who, ultimately, will be carrying out CHABSS鈥 strategic plan. 鈥淭he use of the word cultivating is quite intentional because of what it says about what we鈥檙e trying to accomplish 鈥 that it鈥檚 worth it, that you believe that it can happen, that it takes patience and it takes resources,鈥 Dr. Allen said.

In addition to discussing CHABSS鈥 identity, direction, and vision, Dean Johnson celebrated faculty, staff and student successes, introduced new faculty and staff, announced promotions, and she took questions.
